St. Theresa’s U.P. School, Konniyoor – A Tribute

Dubai:- Our beloved former teacher, Sister Erasma, taught us—children of poor coolie families in a hilly village—to dream beyond the horizons. She believed that English, a universal language, must be accessible to students here. It was her vision and determination that led to the beginning of English medium education at our school, starting from 5th standard.

I was one among 38 students in that first English medium class—none of us could write a sentence without spelling mistakes. Yet Sister Erasma taught us to dream big, even as high as the Burj Khalifa.

In those days, our lives revolved around the school. Our first "pallikoottam" (class gathering) was under a tree in front of a Christian church. That simple beginning eventually grew into a proper school—our pallikudam.

Throughout my life, I have followed the lessons and values I learned from that school. Sister Erasma and Joseph Sir lit a fire in our young minds, inspiring an entire generation. Their guidance continues to motivate us.

St. Theresa’s U.P. School, nestled in the hills of southern Kerala, stands as a beacon of hope. Beside the school, a majestic church with over a hundred steps and a pond leads up to a cathedral shaped like a cross. To the left, there is a convent—home to the nuns who helped shape our lives.

This humble school taught children from poor families—most of them Christians converted from Nadar, Muslim, and Hindu backgrounds—not just how to read and write, but how to dream. Sister Erasma also taught us to share what we had—neychor, pachor, payasam—with one another.

The memory of our school will never fade. Perhaps even the life after death may be lit by the love and prayers we carry in our hearts—for our teachers, and for the place that made us who we are.
